Prairie View A&M University is the second oldest public institution of higher education in Texas, established in 1876 as a land-grant college under the Morrill Act of 1862. It was created during the Reconstruction Era to provide higher education to African Americans in the state of Texas. It began as the Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth, and later evolved into what we now know as Prairie View A&M University.
