God is Dope Clothing Brand
God is Dope is a Christian lifestyle brand. Their mission is to bring awareness to God in their own way through fashion.Ā Sharod Simpson is the creator of the brand and they sell mostly t-shirts, hoodies and caps with their catchy phrase.
History of God is Dope
When Sharod Simpson told a friend in the fashion industry he planned to start an apparel line called God Is Dope, he didnāt get much support. āHe said that is the biggest mistake you will ever make,ā Simpson tells CNN. āHe said thereās no way youāre going to survive with a name like that. But I just believed in it so much.ā
Just a few years later, God Is Dopeās shirts, hats and sportswear ā featuring āGod Is Dopeā and āJust God.ā in white or black letters against bold fabrics ā have caught the attention of entertainers and athletes. The concept is simple: to generate faith-based awareness through fashion, entertainment and influence.
The brand says: āI believe in God in a cool way,ā says Kayla MaDonna, 27, at the firmās 2,300-square-foot warehouse in downtown Atlanta. āItās a conversation piece that is also aesthetically pleasing.ā Faith-based apparel is a rising market with robust competition. But customers say God Is Dope is different because itās an affordable brand that targets young buyers who would otherwise be hesitant to express their spiritually through clothing.
London-based creative director Ant Haynes says itās āthe simplicity of it. It doesnāt push anything on you. It just says God Is Dope. Thatās it.ā āI need to take this seriouslyā
Simpson created the brand concept in 2015, when he was 27. He designed a catchy logo, printed it on a shirt and wore it around town.
āIf I saw 30 people throughout the day, at least 20 people would ask me where I got the shirt,ā Simpson says. āNothing I ever wore got that type of reaction, so, I thought, I need to take this seriously.ā
He cashed in his entire $25,000 in savings and ordered 5,000 shirts. Two weeks later, he admits, anxiety set in when 80 boxes arrived and flooded his small house in Atlanta.
āI thought to myself, how am I going to sell all of these shirts?ā
He and five friends set up shop on college campuses, in store parking lots and near restaurants.
āAnywhere with a crowd, we were there,ā Simpson says.
Within a week, sales rocketed. With a healthy stream of revenue, he rented a billboard and plastered the companyās logo on it. Its social media following swelled. A flagship store followed.
God is Dope Reviews
The brand has had some less than favorable reviews on social media due to some customer service related issues but clearly this brand has had global success with its simple messaging. This brand is one of the most successful small brands that is black-owned and gained worldwide exposure and success due to celebrities embracing it.
